140 B, Perceptual Drawing

In this unit, skills in drawing from observation are cultivated in a series of exercises that focus on the perception of edges, spaces, relationships, form, light and shadow which, when integrated, lead to perception of "the whole." These exercises also allow you to experiment with a variety of drawing media, develop compositional strategies and to learn the value of patience and persistence. You will learn to use your eyes in a more complete way that is essential for artists and designers.

Critical thinking and verbal articulation skills converge in the studio during frequent critiques and discussions of both student projects and historical and contemporary visual artifacts. These activities enable you to incorporate new art and design terms into your vocabulary. Active participation is required in this course because each student brings unique experiences and perspectives that, when shared, can be useful and even inspiring to others.
