143, Visual Literacy Art & Design Lecture

 

This course will focus on Visual Literacy as it applies to visual artifacts including works of art, fine crafts, fashion, industrial design, and the the built environments (including architecture and interior design). [Literacy as it applies to visual and aural communication and media, including advertising, photography, television, film, computers and radio is the focus of a companion course in our program: Visual and Aural Literacy (142).]

 

Course learning objectives
- you will recognize the elements and principles of design and how they are employed by artists and designers
- you will learn about and employ appropriate vocabulary to interpret and analyze visual artifacts and the built environment
- you will examine current critical theory regarding visual literacy and its relevance to your preparations for professional engagement, and you will be able to apply it to your work and the work of others
- you will understand the increasing importance of visual literacy in contemporary culture
- you will become more thoughtful, critical and active viewers
